for the right student CMU is an outstanding school and for the wrong student will get run over there. CMU is great for people who know absolutely what they want to do and one of CMU offerings is that thing. It is not a place to explore, discover who you are and what you want to do. And tracks tend to be very structured and specific Class 1 in fall and Class 2 in spring and cannot take 2 unless you took 1 and if you some how miss 1 then you are SOL till fall again. Campus is pretty little gem in an urban area, but does not feel particularly urban.

Yeah, he'll be fine if he goes there ... kid's a machine. He's been Comp Sci or bust for at least 3 years, and AI for the past 2, so he's hyper-focused on his desired area of study, and he's a nerd, in the best possible way. He's serious about his studies. He'll do well, academically, wherever he goes. If he eventually builds Skynet, he'll be on the side of the machines.
I'm more concerned about the area ... I don't want him catching the trashy cooties (sorry to get technical). We moved from a better part of PA to civilization ... no reason to go backward.

Well, I guess "artificial" intelligence will be a step up from the lack of intelligence that the city has had for several decades.

Ok, this sounds crazy but is true. Several companies are researching the idea of having data centers and AI systems built in orbit.
Yeah…..
The two advantages are that they will run on solar power 24/7 which makes solar energy cheap. And they don’t need cooling saving a huge amount of power.
Another option is building them on the moon. Same advantages, little further to boost. A big issue on the moon would be issues like land ownership, zoning, and approval for a moon based business.
They will all be built robotically and data streamed to earth or up to units.

The Marcellus shale stuff started back in Western PA in the late 90s. It started to really move forward with range resources and some other companies leasing hundreds of thousands of acres of land to produce natural gas and oil. It made some people back there millions but then somebody else got elected president and a lot of that energy was put on the back burner. This energy usage should’ve been going on for the last 15 years.
