Today's games make me realize just how far Penn State...

Yep. That, plus the number 1 recruiting class and much more NIL money and who knows what our new incredible coach will do! Personally, I'm super excited about all the top 5 wins we're due, statistically, once the big guy comes in.
Sure, Alabama may have better players than most of its opponents. But it also plays well in big games. If Franklin had the number 1 class every year at Penn State and killed it in the portal, he probably would have won no more than 50 percent of his games against Top 25 teams vs. about a third. Kalen DeBoer is 19-3 vs. the Top 25 in 3 stops. Including being unbeaten against Lanning, Smart, and Sarkisian. Coaching makes a difference.

Here's a sobering thought. PSU's all time record vs OSU was 13-15 before Franklin became coach. Now it's 14-26.

Yes. There were always areas in his roster that were not stressed and/or the game planning was suspect. His teams were never complete.
Franklin recruited some great athletes. I think he emphasized speed/size over being a great football.player. We had a lot of fast 40 times, but not always the attitude to go with it. Plan may have played into our losses against good teams. But sometimes it felt like the competitiveness/leadership on the field was lacking.

Where have you gone Mark Robinson, Matt Millen, Shane Conlan, and Mike Mauti? The team needs "fighters".

Combination of OSU being much better during that time, playing with a depleted roster and Franklin being horrible in big games and close games. My guess is if these games coached by Franklin were coached by Joe in his prime we would have won in 2014, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2022, 2023 and 2024.
