Week 5: #6 Oregon at #3 Penn State (Tonight 7:30 PM EDT, NBC, Peacock) Game Day Thread

Hypothesis: Kotelnicki's offense doesn't allow for getting in a rhythm. And the OL doesn't drive players off the line cuz it's probably too busy thinking about what to do. And why don't the WRs get open, again?

They would not even had a chance if not for Drew’s gutsy play in the fourth quarter. A real shame he threw the interception. I feel bad for him. The defense let them down as well, although I will say the Duck’s QB is something special.

I honestly think the staff is holding Allar back. He seems to do well in a 2 minute offense. He did well after we fell behind 2 scores and he had to air it out. But after a time out or if the play is called in from the sideline he seems to think instead of use his instincts.

They wanted that explosive play when they didn't need one.

Troy Huhn looks like a good QB with a strong arm, but the McSorley/Pribula QB model is what succeeds in CFB, and in Kotelnicki's offense in particular.

Congrats to the Ducks. Gotta hand it to Dante Moore - he played well. He took some pretty good shots. No turnovers. Oregon has a lot of stars on offense, but we held them in check most of the game. I know everyone will blame Allar for throwing an int on the final play, but I think part of the problem tonight was that we had such a weak non-conference schedule. It seemed like we finally started to adjust to the speed of the game in the 4th quarter. This probably won't hurt us too badly in the polls with the game going to OT. One thing the coaches should learn from tonight, but probably won't, is that Kaytron is the best running back on the team. Singleton should be the change of pace back, with Allen getting the bulk of carries. Ross is a stud. They should get the ball in his hands as much as possible. Pena wasn't too bad, either. Hudson didn't do too much tonight. Not a great game overall by us, but a great finish except for the last play.

Your point about Kaytron and Singleton has been obvious for over a year. At least, to me.
And I do think the staff knows, which is why they decided to start Allen and built a direct snap formation for him.

But then they went back to their old standby, rotating the guys. I'm guessing this was Franklin.

Regarding Allar, I don't blame him. The staff put Singleton in, which means to the Ducks "don't worry about the run", so they dropped a bunch into coverage.

Allar was a better RB than our starting RB (Singleton).

James is an administrator and (essentially) a politician. He will never lead a team to a championship. For the money he's being paid, I'm not OK with that.
I was just thinking the exact same thing. Teams will usually kind of take on the personality of their coach when push comes to shove and under Franklin they turtle up. Its like night and day comparing James to Lanning

The chatter about the OL before the season fooled me. I was was told (or thought I was told) that they were NFL caliber. There are championship players and coaching missing on this team, but get to the playoffs and hope for the best. Kraft and Franklin may need to convene after the season and talk about acquiring talent.

In the end, it's the same old same old: finding ways to lose games like this.

Our performance on O was pathetic for 3 quarters. We played not to lose which means scared to win. It's the familiar pattern of our Ohio State games in recent years.

Finally came to life in the 4th quarter. Tied the game and took a lead in OT. Needed a stop by the D and couldn't get it. Then needed a TD on O and Drew throws the game-ending INT.

Seriously, the record here shows that I've never been a person given to handwringing and finding fault but this gets old.

This loss is not necessarily a season-killer but we are running out of room for error. I mean, does anyone think we're gonna beat Ohio State at the Shoe? So we're looking at two losses minimum. A 3rd anywhere on the schedule eliminates us from playoff contention. Tonight was a game we needed to win.

We will need to play much better in order to beat Indiana, Iowa and even Nebraska. The cupcake opening schedule did not help.
