Why not Terry

I like Terry. It's great how the players are supporting him and that he hasn't been shy about supporting Joe an our past. The problem is I don't think he can bring a lot of new quality players in with him. He was supposed to be our top recruiter but all of our 2026-2027 recruits are bailing out. It seems that they were more attracted to Franklin than Terry.

They are leaving because they prefer stability over chaos. They want to go where they know what coordinators….and thus what schemes and systems they will be in.

Who will be the position coaches? Do they work well together? Agree in style and technique?

Will the schemes fit their skill set? Are the coordinators able to coach them in their positions. Do they put players in the pros?

It Terry had been announced two weeks ago it would have had a huge impact. Even this Sunday would have helped.

Whatever happened to the idea that players commit to a school, not a coach?

I understand the stability over chaos comment but why bail now? Why not wait to see who is named coach in a week or two? Lots of schools have had coaching changes without losing so many players. Look at the players rumored to be transferring to VT. They can't possibly think VT will have more resources and better coaches than PSU.

Agreed. The letterman must get in on the sales pitch and push the culture. MRob, Hack, Lavar, etc.
BTW, Blacksburg does have a nice Cracker Barrel at I-81.

Because the #1 goal is make the pros. You gotta go where you can shine. And you need to know the coaches, the schemes, the staff.

Hello everyone. I've organized a coup and have taken over the program. With that said, there's no time to waste, so it's off to triage...
Proclamations...
1. Terry Smith is Head Coach. A three year contract to start. Salary is $1m for each win with a minimum of $5m. A $1m bonus each for a conference championship and a nat'l championship. His focus is to define and ensure a winning on-field product.
2. Coordinators and position coaches will have the same salary structure as the head coaches, but at 25% and 10% of the value, respectively.
3. A new semi-independent Department of Player Personnel will be created. It's job is to use tools such as analytics, social media, and other networks to identify and recruit championship caliber players for each position. Travel, home visits, and great interpersonal skills are required. Player desire, work ethic, resilience, and overall character will be key recruiting measurements with special emphasis on OL, DL, and LB, to be hard-coded into the effort and culture.
4. A few experienced mentors and experts will be held on retainer to provide non-binding weekly input for coaches as it relates to player success, opportunities and game strategies.
5. A GM will be hired to create an organization and SOPs related to effectively manage all football program duties not related to anything that pertains to the physical aspects of game competition. This would include financials, accounting, bookkeeping, payroll, fundraising, media, PR, communications, game day experience, etc.

That is all.

Go back and read my original post If only Kraft would have read this and listened to me lol.

I don't think it's too late to take the interim tag off Terry. The general thinking is Kraft waited too long, and it would look odd. It might actually work in Kraft's favor as he tried to hire someone else, but everyone came up with the money to retain their coach, so he had to settle for Terry. who many supports anyway
He should have had a better plan, but it was just bad year to be looking for a new coach. Spin that narrative.

He could go after Manny, but if Duke puts up the money to keep him, that's just going to throw more gas on this bonfire.

Terry has been a head coach for 6 games at a major college program and done well. He has that over Hartline.

I do not care about optics from the outside, meaning who cares if hiring Terry looks bad to people outside of Nittany Nation.

The national press will move on to something else once Terry is hired.

Terry is not a $5M guy.
Happy to hire him, but he didn't suddenly become worthy of $5M to $10M a season.

Terry at $6m, an accomplished, balanced run-pass OC for $2.5m and a Manny Diaz level DC for $2.5m. Then combine who's left on the roster and with new guys at market prices. Seven wins in 2026, eight in 2027, then back to normal in 2028. The offense will be what we just saw against UNL and the defense will be what we saw in 2025. Terry and the coordinators will be collaborative and have a better grasp of football than BGJ.

If Terry, then there better be a detailed contingency staffing and structure plan already in place and ready to go, complete with a project manager who is on top of things. No "what do we do now?" BS.
Lavar, Micah, Saquan, Tyler, and even Landon, get ready to make phone calls. Athletic Dept, have an NIL department at the ready. Terry, contact and hire successful coordinators who have the same vision and style you do. And to the PR and Communications people, it's the message and timing. Don't F it up. To all the big donors, chip in a few bucks and time to help support this transition.
I am pumped.

Before Terry is announced, the Athletic/Football department needs to bring in as many letterman as possible, especially the big name ones and get them up on the stage as Terry walks out to the podium. Even the older guys like Ham, Reid, Millen, maybe even as far back as Roosevelt Greer. Have the current players sit up front. Also introduce a newly-hired GM who will speak to the structure and activities that will support Terry, especially over the next two or three critical years. Hold it at The Bryce. Invite the community. Fill the seats. Make it an event and not just an AP wire.
