Franklin Fired -It’s over...

PSU lost 3 of the top DT's and 3 of the 4 top DE's. When you replace men with boys there is going to be significant drop off in the level of play of the DL and it has been evident. Sometimes experience counts for more than talent, as the talent at some positions between UCLA/NW and PSU is not that great. Durant looked better when they were surounded by men than they do next to boys, and although somewhat experienced Fisher and Ford have not played as well as the players they replaced either.

And the QB's from both UCLA and NW outplayed the PSU as well. Both of those teams had better WR's than PSU as well.

Franklin raved about having the best personnel that he's had during his PSU tenure, but that is not true. A big reason he is gone.regon
He could not keep Oregon from scoring twice at games end. His DL got pushed around by 2 and 3 star kids at Northwestern. He could not stop UCLA QB AT ALL. His buyout goes down at season end then FIRE HIS LOSER ***.

You can put all the blame on Knowles if that's your thing. But there is a whole lot more to it than X's and O's when a team replaces 75% of it's DL that was 4 and 5 year players, i.e. men, with boys. PSU seems to have some up and coming talent at DE but those same players will be much stronger in another year or two. At DT PSU has not recruited as well and the young players forced into action early this season don't seem up to the task. 2 and 3 star olinemen that have been in a college S&C program for years can sometimes hold their own and win battles against green 3 and 4 star DT's and that's what happened on Saturday. PSU has no 5 star DT's, but at OSU Knowles had high 4 and some 5 star DT's in every recruiting class which allowed him to reload and not have to rebuid, whereas it's evident from watching the last 3 games that PSU is trying to rebuild at DT and it's not going as well as expected.

In Business, the manager is always responsible. Franklin would still be coach if Knowles stops Oregon once in OT. HE IS PAID $3+ MILLION to do just that. RESPONSIBILITY, a word lost in most places. God bless.

Yep, if boys were men that might have happened. And yes, the manager is responsible, which is why Franklin said he took full responsibility and why he is not PSU's coach now.

A number of the podcasters have said it was obvious that Franklin quit on the team on the last part of the game. I am clearly missing something because I did not see the evidence of this. What did he do during the game?

Again, I am not saying these guys are NFL ready but they all have totally underperformed relative to their talent level, no development but rather regression. Forget about the young backups, we should beat UCLA and NW with the 4 starters on the D Line. And it is not like the rest of the defense has all 2 stars. Knowles could not adjust to Rojas getting hurt. He had no clue. Go back and watch the first half of the UCLA game. That defense was barely trying.

I heard Tengwall say this. Not sure. The playcalling was sketchy. The players quit. I saw that and that is an indictment on Franklin.

Again, you and I don't know their talent level. They have no playing history and relying on what their "star ratings" were is just plain stupid.

Saying a consensus top 5 D-coordinator had no clue is irrational. As fans we would expect that one or two of the mostly younger backup LB's would be ready but we don't see them practice and evaluate them. And making a judgement that if Rojas was still healthy would definately been the difference and resulted in winnning those games also has no justification.

Now if the defense wasn't trying, as you believe, that's something different. That's something that gets coaches fired....... Head coaches.

Thanks. Maybe it was clearer for people at the game and/or for people on the sidelines.

George McClellan. Won a few battles and lost some big ones. He was never fully committed to the fight. Troops were okay with him. Burnside and Hooker were disasters. US Grant ended up being the right choice. He was focused on complete victory and conducted his troops that way. Moral of the story: hire a cigar-smoking West Point guy who finished at the bottom of his class. 😎 Really, hire a proven winner with thick skin.

The last two defensive performances have been horrible. Lack of effort. That is on Franklin AND Knowles. If our defensive talent is no better than the UCLA and NW then this team is laugh out loud overrated.

There's more to the firing of Shames Franklin than lousy football and losing big games.

This season's defense was obviously over rated. The very talented and taken for granted DT's, DE's King at LB, Reed at Safety, were not replaced talent for talent and especially their experience, toughness and maturity. There are some talented young players on defense, particularly at DE. But they are too young and inexperienced and lack the physical maturity for the defense to just line up and dominate like last year's defense did at times. It's more so the Jimmy's and the Joe's than the X's and the O's....

Fast guys at edge and safety, but no truly tough MFers. Maybe DeLuca and Wheatley, but no old fashioned hitters. Hackenberg (sans Cabinda) discusses this with Sickels in his podcast. I don't blame the current team. I blame Franklin for not recruiting and assembling that type of team. A band of brothers rather than a collection of mercenaries.

The overall toughness of the team is sad. I dont see Franklin as tough or hardnosed and the team reflects it. No one is afraid of PSu on Defense... or offense for that matter. Too much concern with dancing and less with hitting.

The older experienced guys getting penalties at late game crucial times.... just shows the lack of discipline and poise...

Just wanted to bring this thread back.

And I believe that Franklin being booed that vehemently were the many fans telling Kraft that they're onto Franklin's schtick, that the team's situation is shockingly bad, and he needed to be gone.

Booing fans scaring AD's is the new paradigm. Well, after the 3-year rebuild seems to be dragging, and astute fans have identified elements of quit then we'll see who coaching carousel hail Mary #2 is.

Continuing to ask for money, attendance, and loyalty from the "consumer", but continuing to be unattentive and arrogant, and failing to provide what was promised year after year can get ugly, I admit.
