Games of interest tomorrow...other than ours

Lacks the punch of last week's many matchups of top-10 teams but there are a number of interesting games:

Michigan at Oklahoma in the nightcap is the headliner. Intersectional matchup of blue bloods both ranked in the top-20. Sooners a 5-point favorite.

Iowa at Iowa State. Cyclones ranked in the top-20. Iowa coming off an unimpressive win over big underdog Albany in a game where Iowa's record-setting FCS transfer QB flopped in his debut. Iowa State favored by 3.

Illinois at Duke. This is not your daddy's Duke football team. They're actually pretty good and got an ace QB from Tulane in the portal. Illinois getting love from the pollsters but only favored by 3 in Durham.

Oklahoma State at Oregon. Cowboys coming off a miserable year and have completely overhauled their roster but they still have a proven head coach in Mike Gundy who in so many words called the Ducks the best team money could buy earlier this week. You'd think that going into Oregon as a 4-TD underdog, Mike would not be providing the Ducks with bulletin board material.

Boston College at Michigan State. Interesting to see what Bill O'Brien can rustle up in East Lansing in a decent intersectional matchup of middle-of-the-road teams. Michigan State a 5-point favorite.

One of the few times I'll be rooting for Oklahoma & Oklahoma State.

We'll find out if Illinois is this year's Indiana.

You'll have a lot of company with regard to Oklahoma. It'll be very interesting to see how the Cheaterines fare down in Norman.

As for Oklahoma State, granted, it'd be neat to see them pull off a win as such a heavy underdog but no way it will happen. Plus honestly, I think we'd like to see Oregon ranked as high as possible going into that September 27 showdown when we'll have every intangible working in our favor.

That Duke game is interesting. I know nothing about them and did not know yhey got an ace QB in the portal. I do know that Illinois is getting a ton of love. I kind of blindly picked Illinois but now I'm thinking Duke could spring the upset as Bielema lays a fat egg.

Looking forward to the Cheaters at Okie, can't root hard enough for the Sooners and I never really cheer for them.

Anxious to see the Ducks play a team with a pulse. I want to see how Dante Moore plays. He's the wildcard for them and if he is the real deal and can handle the White Out crowd then we are in for a tussle.

The Duke transfer from Tulane is Darian Mensah who got a reported $8 million NIL deal and played great last week...against Elon.

Now he steps way up in class. It will be very interesting to see how he does tomorrow playing at home against a top-15 team.

Bryce Underwood, Cheaterines Freshman QB being touted as a "generational talent" after his performance against New Mexico in Ann Arbor. Will be interesting to see if Venables defense can contain/confuse him. Okie is on the clock. This is a year where Venables has to win at least 9 games or he's gone.

I'm not so sure even beating Duke would mean much, but a loss to them definitely would be pretty damning for their playoff hopes. I loved Manny as our DC, but I'm not buying Duke stock...yet. waiting to see if the offense can produce.

I watched some of that game. They were so starved for a QB who could complete a forward pass that they overhyped his performance. Them again, after the Arch lead up to week 1...

Anyhow, he did look good, but it's premature to label a true freshman as generational after 1 game. Particularly a 34-17 game. Had that been 70-17, I might have lent an ear.

Bryce could be in for a rude awakening. Road starts are tough. Of course, I'm not entirely sure how good OU could be either. Venables has disappointed so far after Riley gutted the team when he left for SoCal.

Caught the end of the Iowa game. Gronowski doesn't look like much to worry about right now. Maybe the game will slow down for him by the time he sees us, but right now, he does not look like much to worry about vs. the average Iowa QB. He held on to the ball too long and was sacked twice in a 2-minute drill. He's got to be more situationally aware than that.

I also caught Iowa's final possession. The Hawkeyes had been hoping that Gronowski's stellar performance at the FCS level would translate to the big time but the signs don't look good so far. He played poorly against Albany last week and looked over his head in that final possession today when Iowa needed a drive to tie or win the game. You can't take a sack in a situation like that and he did...twice in a row.

Maybe he'll come around as the season goes on and he adjusts to the speed at the higher level of football. However, as things stand right now, our October 18 trip to Iowa City, which has been a challenging place for us to play, doesn't look quite so daunting. I mean, I wish no bad luck on the young man but I'd rather play the Hawkeyes with the Gronowski of their first two games than with an improved model.

Didn't see any of the Illinois game, but based on the box score, they must be pretty good, beating a decent Duke team by 26 points on the road.

Oregon already up 13 on Oklahoma State in the 1st quarter. What was it Mike Gundy was saying about the best team money could buy? Run your mouth after the game, Mike, not before.

-Watched some of Illinois, they were on their heels early but just too strong for the Dukies and wore them out.
-Watched some of Iowa State and Iowa looked like they were going to do what Illinois did and wear down Iowa St but Iowa St had enough in the tank for one more FG drive and Iowa is not built for coming back in a 2 minute drill.
-Watched some of Texas and they struggled much more than the score indicates against a team that lost to C. Mich in week 1.
-SMU lost to Baylor who lost to Auburn in week 1. They will not be ranked.
-Oregon is flat out dominant right now. Not sure Okie St is a good team but Oregon is too fast and physical for them.
-Kentucky - Ole Miss looks like a battle
-Florida having trouble early with S. Florida
-Wisconsin losing 3-0 in 2Q to Middle Tenn. Wisconsin is bad. Maybe not Northwestern bad, but NW had a much better week this week
-Troy up 7-0 on Clemson and just got the ball back so they stopped the game for lightning in the area (looked sunny at the time of stoppage) to let Clemson regroup

Edit. And Wisconsin takes a 7-3 lead midway through the 2nd Q

Between a BS person foul call help from the refs and Troy being buffoons on clock management (wasted 30 seconds on the 2nd to last play of half forcing a very long FG attempt on 3rd down), Troy lead held to 16-3.
