Off Season Articles Thread

Seeing predictions that Fickell will be gone mid-season.
I wasn't sure why he took that job from Cincy. Wiscy is between a rock and a hard place. He's tried to modernize their game from being a power run/strong defense team to having a more open offense. But he hasn't been able to recruit the athletes. Wiscy always gets these giant OLmen, TEs and power RBs. He's been stuck with traditional personnel in a game that doesn't fit them. Plus, now that the B1G went away from the divisions, they have a difficult schedule.

He had good success at Cincy and could have waited for a better-positioned program to open up.

I saw this today, Wiscy has a heck of an October schedule. And on a side note, I've been hearing that Lincoln Keinholtz is outplaying Sayin for tOSU's starting QB. tOSU likes Sayin's superior athleticism and isn't happy about it.

Back to Wisconsin, they play Alabama in late September, followed by MD. Then...

@ Michigan Oct 4
Iowa Oct 11
Ohio State Oct 18
@ Oregon Oct 25

The only thing I've seen written mentioned that the team was split in half and everybody was running drills. LK did have Smith and Tate as WRs on his end FWIW.

(This article says Tate was with Sayin, I'd read a different one)

---

Wisky. Brutal stretch for the days when they were a 10 win team. Right now, it would take a miracle to win 2 of those games unless they drastically improve.

Yeah...Adding in Alabama, it is hard to see them escaping those five games with less than four losses. Iowa is certainly beatable, but AL, O, UM, and tOSU is tough. Best possible is 2-3 (Iowa and UM). They have a bye after MD and before Michigan. That tees up UM as their "must-win" game. Then it is that tough four game stretch, including a west coast trip to Oregon. They then have a bye and host Washington.

PSU with three preseason all-Big Ten predictions: QB, RB, and OL

Is Keinholtz the one who started that Cotton bowl for them a couple years back and they looked terrible and he was not any good? Forget who they played.

The backup QB did a great job in that game. That's the thing I left out. Allen gets some blame, but give the kid and his coaches credit.
Okay he did well but was that because he is really good or that we were completely unprepared for him? A back up should not come in cold and have that kind of success in a crucial juncture of the game against the talent we had on that D. I blame Allen 100%.

Why would the Athletic not want to cover Penn State football? Very strange.

I'm going to guess that she didn't bring in enough eyeballs to warrent whatever they paid her. The fact she is starting her own thing and didn't align with any of the other football related sites likely means she either believes that her core base will pay her enough to keep going or nobody wanted her.

She's tended to be a good break from the boys club and generally has some good questions, but she is also probably the most negative person on the beat since Jones retired.

Good points. I think it is probably more of the Athletic would cover Penn State football, they just don't want it being Audrey Snyder.

Dave Jones finally retired?!! That guy was so anti Penn State. Hopefully he is permanently out of the public eye and media. Every time we lost a tough game he had this smug I told you Penn State was not that good attitude. Is Flounders still lingering around? The guy who perpetually looks like he just woke up from an all night bender.

That was Devin Brown. Who is now at...Cal.
No, Devin Brown did start the game but was injured early and Kleinholtz played most of the game and had a poor game. The offensive line was horrible in that game so, it wasn't by any means all the fault of Kleinholtz.

Personally, I don't feel that game should have much of any impact on his ability to be starting quarterback. He should be starting with a clean slate and be competing on an equal basis with Sayin.

Dailybuck777, what Intel are you hearing about the QB competition for the Buckeyes? I thought coming out of Spring that Sayin would be the choice but Kleiholz has been around longer and might have an edge with Day's system.
Hearing anything about the WR coach as OC, will he be the real OC this 2nd time around or just "in name only" again?

I had forgotten the injury.

I kind of figure it's like last year. Didn't Day prop up Brown all the way through fall camp?

I fully expect Sayin to be the starter outside of injury. What about you?

Maybe it was easier to just say they didn't want to cover PSU football rather than just firing her. Maybe they decided to get rid of her when after Franklin said he wouldn't address or respond to questions about a player off field issue she immediately asked that very question. Most places I worked at that behavior in dealing with the person that your job relies on would get you fired immediately. They could have been afraid to fire her possibly due to her being a woman, or for other reasons, but after giving it some thought they found a different way to get out of the situation. Who knows, but I never thought she had enough insight or knowledge of PSU football that would justify a subscription. JMO

That was the exact thing I read on the 247 board.

You may very well be right. I don't follow the publication enough to know what they cover and if it was worthwhile or niche.

Tough to read. I expect that Sayin is the better passer, but he looks kind of small to me. I would fear that he could turn into a Quinn Ewers. Kleinholtz is a very good athlete, but in the past not that great of a passer. In several competitions, he has thrown the ball better than Sayin. Kleinholtz is one of ten players (not normally a qb) who has won the very difficult iron buckeye award for fitness & gym work. I think it is a real competition between Sayin & Kleinholtz. Thing that concerns me about Kleinholtz is whether he can hit his receivers out of the break and on time. If he could he could be really dangerous.

I think Day intends to relinquish the play calling to Hartline. He views himself in nil age as more of a ceo. Hartline scares me because the last legendary position coach to be appointed as coordinator was Kerry Combs who was an absolute disaster. When Day goes outside of OSU and picks coordinators he is mostly successful. Jeff Hafley, Chip Kelly Jim Knowles. So far I am hearing good things about Matt Patricia. Outside of the defensive tackle position that may turn out to be very weak, the defense is loaded.

I felt very badly for Devin Brown who was an all around good guy and welcomed all competition but whose career at OSU was derailed by two very untimely injuries.
