Michigan scandal thread

I've been following the 247 thread since it began. They kept info and tweets flowing. Some things of note:

-every team who recently had Level 1 violations has been subjected to a post season ban. (Michigan has SIX on this COI and is currently on probation from Burgergate)
-every team who recently had Level 1 violations has vacated wins from the seasons involved. (This would lead to 3 Big 10 titles and their national championship to be vacated)

I don't know what they will do, but my guess is:

-2 or 3 year post season ban
-vacate the wins from '21-'23 (titles would then be revoked by the awarding party's)
-recruiting restrictions based on the # of visits they can offer, in homes they can do, etc (unlikely a scholly restriction since the NCAA isn't over that no more, but perhaps they could limit roster spots)
-8 digit fine
-suspension of Moore (unknown the game #s; Michigan wanted 2 and wanted to pick them, I assume it's more than 4)
-show cause notice for Harbaugh, Stallions, etc

Michigan has long cried "NCAA overreach". They wouldn't have went to the COI if a 1 year bowl ban was the gist of it.
I am seeing a lot of this. We’ll see… I am skeptical

That one was shared on Message Board Geniuses twitter. Here is what premierdrum wrote tonight.

The gist: NOBODY knows anything but the COI panel. Everything that anybody has said is strictly opinion. Michigan will receive notification around 9am. There will be a NCAA press conference either at noon or 1pm.

Who knows. These things Get leaked. We see it all the time. People are paid off. Someone who tied it up and makes $35k per year offers the info for $100k and outlets are happy to pay it. The problem is knowing who knows and who is making it up.

My bet is a two Year bowl ban and a hefty fine.

Supposedly College Football Playoff and Big 10 planning press releases today as well.

That sounds like vacating titles.

Well, and I say this with no hyperbole, the NCAAs' credibility is completely at stake. Anything less than a very powerful message is going to gut them in total. Teams like Indiana and OK State will know that the system is fixed to aid the blue bloods.

I am hearing that an "unprecedented" fine will be levied (the largest to date for football infractions was $8m against TN), but that is unimpressive to me. It is just "funny money" for these universities that will just tack it onto kids trying to get an education at Michigan, which is a great university. For comparision, UM's endowment is over $19B. That is $19,000,000,000. A $10m fine would be change next to the lint in their pockets.

If this report is accurate...and I don't know whether it is...Michigan's penalty amounts to a slap on the wrist.

Then again, Thamel says this is "among...punishments," suggesting there are others. I guess we'll find out soon:

I agree that, if correct, this is meaningless. A $20m fine against an annual sports budget of $80m and an endowment of $19,000,000,000 is peanuts. If they don't get a two-year bowl ban, at least, it is a horrible look for the NCAA.

Agreed. A bowl ban was what they feared most. Reduction in scholarships would have been nice too.

This fine will be touted as "record-breaking" but for the reasons you stated, it's very far from a back-breaker.

I believe vacation of the 2023 national title was their biggest fear. Inability to participate in future playoffs would be second.
i don't really agree. You can never take away the year they had in winning and celebrating (and cashing in on) their natty. That is in the past and cannot be changed. Losing bowl participation would have resulted in a big loss to the portal of players that want to play for a natty.

Contrast that reasoning with the quasi-death penalty they gave Penn State over an issue that, regardless of what else you may or may not believe about it, had no bearing on nor gave any advantage with regard to competition on the field.

They had no qualms about "unfairly penalizing student-athletes" in that case and even exposing them to physical harm resulting from the deep cuts in scholarships that forced them to play short-handed.

Michigan is Too Big To Fail. It's that simple. The NCAA could have made a statement but instead confirmed itself to be the joke that everyone knows it is.

Yeah. To be honest, I am just sick about this. The naysayers were 100%. This is a big nothing. The penalty is less than 1/100th of one percent of their endowment and is a simple speed bump in their annual football revenues. As some said "who wouldn't pay $20m for a natty?" and this is less than tOSU's player payroll last season.

A big fat nothing.

These penalties are essentially nothing. If the NCAA can't impose a post season ban on programs then they have no power and cheating can just continue.

Michigan will have no negative impact on recruiting or on field performance. It is like it never happened. Nothing to see here and this will disappear from being any news in the next 24 hours.
