Michigan scandal thread

These penalties are essentially nothing. If the NCAA can't impose a post season ban on programs then they have no power and cheating can just continue.

Michigan will have no negative impact on recruiting or on field performance. It is like it never happened. Nothing to see here and this will disappear from being any news in the next 24 hours.
The penalty is less than Ohio State paid for its entire national championship payroll last season. The $20m, i all probability, pales in comparison to what they took in by winning a national championship.

Agreed. A bowl ban was what they feared most. Reduction in scholarships would have been nice too.

This fine will be touted as "record-breaking" but for the reasons you stated, it's very far from a back-breaker.
The NCAA should close shop or universities should leave en masse.
They just let a football program cheat their way to conference titles and a Natty with no consequences. Disgraceful!

Agreed, Rick.

It's the classic two-tier system of justice. We see it in every walk of life, to include sports, and it's a big reason why there's so much cynicism in the air.

I mean, they violated their own guidelines in this case so how can they impose a bowl and/or post-season ban on any school ever again?

Another factor here is the conference. I'm guessing the Big-10 was gearing up to defend the Wolverines, perhaps even with a lawsuit, if the NCAA had done any damage to Golden Child Michigan.

The Big-10 and the SEC are the two 1000-pound gorillas on the college football scene. I doubt the NCAA wants any part of tangling with either league.

Why even follow what they handed down? They were already on probation. Now it's 4 years. And that means what? They send in an extra document every month/quarter/year now that nobody else is?

Why pay the fine? Who is gonna make them? What are they gonna do if they don't? Give em 6 years probation?

Harbaugh will be tainted, but he's still in the NFL. He wasn't coming back to college anyhow if he left his Alma mater.

Stallions was never going to be a legit coach. His operation was essentially a complete success. He brought Michigan back from the 8-4 average seasons to 3 Big 10 titles and a natty.

And if you were upset that Notre Dame and OSU outbid us for a couple prospects, wait until they start funneling their funds into hacking headsets, practice footage, or even paying analysts for the info. What's the worst they are gonna do to ya?

The whole thing is just a bad joke on everyone not affiliated with Michigan. They don't want to penalize student athletes with the program now. That is simply absurd. Think about it.

The student athletes came to Michigan knowing that penalties were swirling around the program. They made their choice at their own risk. Plus in this world of catering to all these athletes they can all transfer. Yeah they have to be there this year but you could make the post season ban start next year if you had to.

The point is that by just punting on the penalty of a post season ban you are utterly toothless in your penalties. Penalizing Jim Harbaugh is completely irrelevant. They don't even ban the head coach, Moore, for a season or two.

All this does is send a message that a program like Michigan can do what they want whenever they want with no regard to integrity or rules or compliance and nobody will do much about it. Disgusting.

I agree, but let's face it -- is anyone really surprised by the NCAA's decision? I'm not...

Here is a great point. The NCAA abdicated the ability to substantially penalize a program...at least a blue-blood program like UM. Cheating was, ostensibly, rewarded. Not only that, the coverup of the cheating was awarded.

Wait, isn't Sherron Moore still the head coach? He was part of that cheating coaching staff. Unbelievable. NCAA just gave full approval of cheating to win. Michigan laughing!

The investigation makes it clear….UM does what it wants. The pathetic and powerless NCAA issues minimal consequences which I’d be very interested to see if UM even follows.

Moore should be banned for a year for his involvement (and previous infractions during Covid), they should have to vacate wins (for unfair advantage), and should have a postseason ban. Im sure a donor(s) will pay the fine.

They got off easy.

That is alot. They would deserve it based on their lack of cooperation and denials but I don't think the NCAA has the guts to do it. Really disappointed that the B1G Commissioner went to bat for those out and out cheaters. He disgraced himself.
I believe the best penalty that would actually have a chance of being imposed was reducing the number of assistant coaches. That would actually affect Michigans performance on the field. The money sanction is peanuts.
