New portal commits. First one in

Tengwall's latest review of the OL has Goodman as the left OT. It seems that with Goodman, Sexton, and Aliciene the there is plenty of talent at OT to find the 2nd OT starter opposite Donkoh. But Tengwall takes a somewhat negative review regarding OL depth as he sees the OL currently.

Could be. He was a 5 star by some recruiting services in the 2025 class and absolutely dominated at the All American Bowl.

agree they are a bit light on the OL. They now have 3 potential C (Cousins could slide over if needed) but could use 1 more OT for sure and probably 2nd depending on if the ISU guys are ready or not.

Same with DE, I like the top 4 but need another 1-2. I hope that one of the higher ranked WR who visited find their way here as well.

As of right now we had 30 announce their return, 26 remain unannounced, added almost 30 in the portal though I'm not sure even 247 is keeping up, lost 48 to transfer, and had almost a non-existent 2026 class to backfill a heavy dose of those to the NFL or out of eligibility. I think we add maybe as many as 30 or so more (most depth players). We will get to 105 right? So we are only about halfway done landing portal talent.

Edit, my bad, with the ISU recruits and other 2026 guys that we flipped, we are now at 12 for the class of 2026. So maybe 20 more coming in the portal?

good pick up. Need another OT and DE but the roster is looking good. This third TE and a few of the other ISU guys were specifically brought in as depth pieces to make up for losing most of the 25/26 recruits. It looks like a good plan so far.
I agree. The roster is looking pretty good. With the amount of time it took to get the HC hire complete, the loss of all but 2 players ftom the recruiting class, and players leaving because of the change on HC and many of the assistant coaches, it was always going to be an uphill battle this year.

Fileppo appeared in 12 games for West Virginia as a true freshman in 2025, registering 12 tackles and one tackle for loss. Fileppo posted a career-high five tackles and a tackle for loss in West Virginia's season finale against Texas Tech to go along with three tackles against UCF and two tackles against Colorado. He will have three years of eligibility remaining at Penn State.

They have practice squad players and sometimes those guys do get called up. But they have the numbers to run scout team for practices.
I understand.. i should have said it better
I am not saying the roster should be at 53 + thr additional players for practice squad and however many additional players NFL teams are allowed to have

I l was responding to only having 80 players on the roster to have more NIL. Having less than 105 players does not seem to me to b3 a problem

11 on offense, 11 on defense, add another 30 as special teams and backups. Just make the roster 80 and save money. And restock every year via the portal. 😎
80 is a little low, but this is why hs recruits and walk ons will still be part of rosters. Teams will keep 8-12 walk ons and recruit 20+ hs players at lower‘salaries’ so they have more for the starting lineup and main subs.

IMO the only reason to pay NIL to more than 50 players is because you're paying to attract promising freshmen who typically aren't ready to contribute as freshmen.

It would be hard to sustain depth due to injuries with only 80 players. That would mean probably 3/4 of those 80 players have to get on the field and contribute from start to finish of the season.

How many players are contracted to an NFL team including taxi squad? Three deep on both offense and defense is 66. Add some specialists and 80 can work. Tell an OT to also learn the OG position, a Safety to also learn the CB position, and so forth. And let's not forget that "Concrete Charlie" was a two-way superstar. Even MLB has centerfielders pitching ninth innings from time to time.
