I think PSU will be competitive in the future because they seem very committed to spend whatever is necessary. They might still have a disadvantage with NIL but they'll be in the ballpark. The problem is it's going to take a couple of years to rebuild.

Evaluation and smart targeting spending is the key. See Indiana.

Kraft and the Admin made big commitments to expand and modernize facilities as part of their wanting to reenergize PSU football and the game day experience. They are saying "enough of this shi+" and want to commit to being a top five football program, but they also see the price increases and added revenue from the effort. So, with that said, what new HC gets the fanbase pumped and takes the team to a national championship? I believe I can tell you which ones don't.

James Madison players were happy to transfer to Indiana because it meant more $$$ and P4 football. It worked out because that group outperformed their rankings. I think that would b difficult to repeat. Would Nebraska players follow Ruhle? Or Missouri players follow Drinkwitz? I don't think it's quite the same situation but it would be a hek of a thing if Pribula came back.

He greatly improved ND's line play, I believe. He had them in a much better place than they were when he took over. But QB play was a problem there. He's had very good QBs at LSU, but LSU doesn't seem to be much better than 9-3 in the SEC. Not sure if he's had enough time yet to get things going, but patience may be running out. Kelly did win D2 championships, btw. Not a fan because he doesn't seem genuine. Witness his fake accent at his press conference. There was something about him filing for divorce from his wife and denying it (they did not divorce) when he first got to LSU that seemed problematic. I think he can coach, but I have questions about his character.

Early in his tenure at ND every other word from Kelly on the sidelines was a 4 letter word which didn't seem to mesh well at all with the Catholic school behind their football team. He cleaned that up most likely due to pressure to do so from ND.

I'm hoping he stays in the SEC....
 
If Kraft and Rhule had spoken previous to Franklin getting sacked, and where Kraft had been listening to vintage "the Penn State way" donors and didn't really understand most fans' expectations, then get out the popcorn. 🍿
 
If I were asked to provide interview questions and topics for head coach candidates...
1. Best offensive philosophy for Big10 play.
2. Best defensive philosophy for Big 10 play.
3. What makes a successful running attack? What are causes of a poor running attack?
4. What makes a successful passing attack? What are causes of a poor passing attack?
5. Is leadership important? What are attributes of coaching leadership? Of player and team leaders?
6. Do you favor speed or toughness?
7. Explain the criticality of the quarterback position and the key attributes of a successful quarterback.
8. What do you look for in coordinators?
9. In this new era of NIL, what are your locker room concerns? What are pay model that won't have negative effects on team trust and camaraderie?
10. What is your approach to assessing talent?
11. What is your approach to attracting both portal and high school talent to the program?
12. Assuming all necessary resources are in hand, what does it take from the coaching staff to win both conference championships and national championships?

Played in one national championship game and 2 playoff games. Under Notre Dame's comparatively strict academic standards reasonably good accomplishment. Also very good record at Cincinnati. Personally, I think he is an ahole. Lied to Cincinnati players when he left Cincinnati.

I believe that Kraft has genuine interest in DeBoer, Drinkwitz, and Elko, however, all three could make the playoffs and if they do, they will be hard to pull, and they would have a very late start trying to save the recruiting class and evaluating portal needs. IMO, that leaves current successful coordinators, the one that has the most upside is probably Joe Brady. I personally like Hartline a lot, and I see him as an eventual successful head coach somewhere, but he is probably viewed as not quite ready for all of the non coaching BS that head coaches have to deal with.

The latest Tengwall’s you tube with the blue white illustrated guy lays out a pretty realistic view of the coach search. Rhule is by no means out of the picture, but could play himself out of the picture. Of all the coordinators, They lay out a good argument for Brady.

 
With the portal dates and the December high school signing date, and now a 12 team, soon to be 14 teams possibly playoffs , Hiring a successful p4 coach away from a successful program during a playoff run is really difficult IMO. Even if they are interested.
