Next coaching candidates

An also in people's minds was his consistent lack of preparedness and execution in those big games. It wasn't just a random thing. Specific failures at critical times meant that Franklin didn't understand important detail for winning those games.
And don't forget the in game decisions that were bewildering at times such as going for 4th downs in his own territory early in games against Un-high-ya when he always claimed he as so analytically aligned with best practice strategies but his bizzare strategies at times directly contributed to losses of games that he could have and should have won.....

Your fascination with Terry is interesting.
There is little evidence that Terry would prevent significant portal defections or that he would fare better than someone that is a current P3 head coach.

"I think at this point, Terry's the only one whose gonna keep our top guys from hopping in the portal themselves or jumping ship to VT."

Let me be clearer for you Frank. It's not about specific areas (ie recruiting). Terry has never done the job. He has no relevant work experience to suggest he can do a job at THIS level - managing multiple levels of people, and a program worth $1.2B.

The analogy of flying a cessna vs a jumbo jet is accurate.
There are reasons that people, in any field, get bigger titles/roles at smaller companies and often then take lower roles (with similar scope of responsibility) at bigger companies.
Other than Terry's work as a high end position coach over a long tenure at PSU, his work to make PSU's CB position pretty much a pipeline to the NFL which hadn't been done in the history of PSU football before Terry took that spot, Terry's recruiting results and responsibilities are probably his best accomplishment and resume resposibility. PSU owned the WPIAL for the last 6-8 years directly due to Terry's relationships in Western PA. Sure, Franklin flew in by helicopter and made headlines, but it was Terry who did the leg work. And Franklin recognized Terry as a top recruiter by the fact that in addition to being Associate Head Coach Terry has been Defensive (Player) Recruiting Coordinator. Terry's performance in that area of his responsibilities also reflects positively to Terry's organizational skill.

I'm not really advocating for Terry to be the next PSU coach, but it's time to stop dissing Terry's resume and his broad accomplishments as an integral part off Franklin's staff over Franklin's entier tenure at PSU.

I think the bottom line here is. Terry is going to feel slighted, and the player's, most fan's, former players, and DONORS that Terry should have been given a chance. If he doesn't do well as head coach in a few years find someone else. There are plenty of Chesney's, and Campbell's out there in 3 years.
I'm not saying Terry is going to be a guaranteed success, nobody can. But if he is not going to get a chance, I believe a lot of portal defections will happen. A lot of donor's will stop supporting as much, not to mention the fans. It will take a new coach many years to rebuild any credibility.

By hiring Terry you would most likely keep the current roster, plus an unprecedented influx of support from boosters. It might be just a short term solution if Terry turns out to be a bust. But this University can take what mistakes were made in this coaching search and do it better next, I hope !

All the local talk personalities agree with what I am saying. Funny I was just listening to the local radio guy's I forget his name, but he said basically what I said in the why not Terry thread I started.

UCONN or Memphis is the HC job that Terry Smith could hope to get...not PSU, not OSU, not even Purdue

When it comes down to it Terry has so far not expressed any interest in being a head coach, or being in any coaching capacity, at any place other than PSU.

Terry is very tied to PSU and all of his interviews and emotions he expressed while on camera lead me to believe that when it really comes down to it Terry could still want to stay at PSU as one of the top assistants to PSU's new coach. But that would be up to the new coach obviously. But if Terry did stay at PSU the exodus from PSU's current roster would likely be lessened considerably. I really hope Terry stays at PSU in some capacity mainly because I believe he is an asset to PSU and the PSU football program, and the side benefit could be considerably more roster retention over the next 2 months. I'll admit that I also love Terry because he's a Gateway grad, as I am.........;)

I'm starting to think we need to clean house with a lot of these players anyway. I suspect it was their selfishness and infighting that caused Franklin to get fired in the first place and tanked what should have been a championship run. There is clearly some rot in the locker room. Might be better in the long run to clear that rot out and keep those that are true Penn Staters. Plus, this over the top push for Smith by players has rubbed many the wrong way. Now with the leaked video to sabotage the hiring efforts. There are some players that we are better off without.

There is a big gap between "dissing Terry's accomplishments" and correctly noting that his resume should preclude him from being the next PSU coach.
Let's be honest, at this point, Franklin's resume precluded him from many jobs in CFB. VT is a step down. Their previous hire was a first time HC who was JF's DC. Noting reality is not a diss. It's noting reality in an unemotional, logical way.

Terry as head coach is highly probable to be a failure that sets PSU back much further. He isn't ready. He doesn't have the experience. He needs to cut his teeth at HC or even coordinator at a lesser school. If that means losing some players, fine. I suspect that those who leave will be the same players whose selfishness took playoff run talent and turned it into a mess.

I agree with you to some extent, but the locker room was Franklin's responsibility. Franklin always goes on and on about being a "players coach". It was one of the first things out of his mouth when he was starting his job search during his prime time Saban conversation which I believe was not appropriate at all given how PSU did everything Franklin asked (salary, facilities, ....) which still didn't help Franklin win any big games.

It only take a couple of negative influencers in the locker room to turn the attitudes away from what it takes for a team to perform at a high level and I hope Terry stays and helps the new coach identify and get rid of the cancer but also keep a nucleus of the talent that we all know exists on the roster which has been listed previously in this thread.

Okay. Does Rojas "think" or does he "know"? Serious question.
Let's be real. If Terry is hired and doesn't bring big reinforcements through the portal and uncommitted recruits, how many "top guys" and sticking around for Terry? Maybe they'll stay for NI $, but that's not related to Terry.

I don't believe Terry's resume "precludes" him from being PSU's next head coach. It makes that move much less likely. But decisions on head coaches are not always made from text books or along the lines of traditional career steps. Generalizations don't alway work in hiring withing sports and big surprises happen more fresquently than some here want to admit.

Hiring decsions for coaches in sports are made in many different ways. Some by committee and others at the whim of the man who's really in charge. At Dallas for example Jerry Jones makes ALL the decisions. We really don't know who or what group are pulling the strings at PSU other than Kraft is the point man. So I don't believe that "preclude" is logiacally a useful word in discussions of sports coaches including top 20 program head coaching hiring.

I still think Terry can't be on the sidelines under a new head coach, because the first losing streak and the fans will be chanting Terry's name. If he was a defensive or offensive coordinator I doubt that would happen though.
If memory servers me right, I think that was a reason for Bill not keeping Scrap around.

Only Terry could stop the bleeding. He had incredible widespread support from all aspects in Nittany Nation….except the administration. And wearing a JoePa Button plus having the entire staff wear slacks and old style football spikes just like Joe sealed his fate.

He could have kept most players, those players and letterman would have helped get portals and new recruits. And doing so would have kept us competitive next season.

Now we have to hope and pray. Somehow believe donors will suddenly sink huge amounts into a spiraling program. That fans will fill the stadium and buy licensed product. That money will continue to come in for the stadium project.

That tv appearances continue to generate income and inspire future recruits. That we get national prime time broadcasts instead of noon kickoffs on BTN.

There is a possibility this will hit us harder than the scandal and sanctions of 2012. Back then the fans and team was so pissed it raised an angry determination to fight injustice. It was a source of pride of us against the world. Fans came out in defiance of the hatred.

Now this is a self inflicted severe wound. And the portal, NIL, Big Money are far more influential on the program. In the current world image is everything. And this image is really bad.

Who knows what is reality but this post from TOS is also concerning. Perhaps there is more to the mess than we knew.

"For anyone that hasn’t listened to LaVar’s XM radio this morning (Two Pros and a cup of Joe), go take a listen. Wow. 🤯 He goes scorched earth on Jay and Lubrano. Moreso Jay. Says Jay is short selling PSU behind the scenes and sabotaging the whole program. Also, says he is using Terry as a pawn out of selfishness to attempt to clear Joe’s name. It’s a no holds barred tongue lashing. He also said Jay was leading the charge to get rid of Franklin and insinuated that he had been for some time."

The way this has transpired with Terry and the players making their push, I believe Terry has to go. You have players secretly videoing the AD and then releasing to undermine his search. Terry can no longer be a PSU coach. I wanted to give him a PSU job for life, just not the head job. But the rot in the locker room needs a clean break. Get rid of those who have been loyal only to Franklin and Smith and keep those who are true Penn Staters. The rot in the locker room took the best national championship chance in decades and turned it into a selfish circus. Clean it out. Get a fresh start. I love Terry but he can't stay now in any capacity.

I say we start the cleaning out with Pat Kraft who has botched the hiring process for a new head coach by having PS as the only P4 team left without one. Early signing ends today and we missed out on a pivotal piece to stabilize the program and roster for current and incoming players.

Kraft's career is absolutely on the line as well and I'm sure that he knows this.

Joe's name does need to be cleared at some point. It was a deep state hit job. Nothing happened in the shower per "victim", Joe reported what was told to him as he should, then came the lawyers, PSU's cowering, and those repressed memories and the big payouts. BTW, Jay can say what he wants, produce media, and even shout it out at Willard, but he cannot be directly manipulating, IMO.

These aren't my words. They were summarization by another poster of Lavar's words. I also don't want to turn this into a Paterno was railroaded thread because he was and we all know that. No need to rehash that.

It points to a primary issue, the pretending, and the perceptions that may, under the surface, affect whether the program succeeds.
