Next coaching candidates

I don't believe Terry's resume "precludes" him from being PSU's next head coach. It makes that move much less likely. But decisions on head coaches are not always made from text books or along the lines of traditional career steps. Generalizations don't alway work in hiring withing sports and big surprises happen more fresquently than some here want to admit.

Hiring decsions for coaches in sports are made in many different ways. Some by committee and others at the whim of the man who's really in charge. At Dallas for example Jerry Jones makes ALL the decisions. We really don't know who or what group are pulling the strings at PSU other than Kraft is the point man. So I don't believe that "preclude" is logiacally a useful word in discussions of sports coaches including top 20 program head coaching hiring.

Don't disagree about wacky decisions in sports sometimes paying off, but Jerry Jones is THE example of mismanagement never paying off. IIRC, the cowboys currently have the longest drought of any NFL team playing in a conference championship game. Let that sink in. The most valuable franchise has one of the worst outcomes because of poor and risky management.

FTR, my statement was that Terry's resume "should preclude him." I never said it would and I stand by that. Terry to UCONN or Memphis is reasonable. Hartline to USF is a bit of a stretch, but not crazy. Terry to PSU HC is borderline insane.
Take your emotion out of this and answer one question.
Would Terry Smith be a potential candidate to take over as HC at Purdue? The answer, of course, is NO. If Purdue wouldn't consider him, then logically, we shouldn't even be having this discussion about PSU hiring him. I'll say it again...his resume should preclude him from being PSU's next HC.

NOW!
1. Shut down physical and electronic access by all Franklin people, take badges, and walk them out. Have them sign NDAs and non-competes if they want a severance.
2. Immediately get the recruitment and NIL team organized and give them clear and simple directives as to what needs to be accomplished over the next month. Retainment and recruitment. Bring in any letterman who wish to get involved.

Looking at Iowa's St's depth chart in case he can bring some with him, they have only 3 offensive starters out of eligibility and 2 (possibly 3, one listed as SR, not sure if he has a year left) out of eligibility on defense. We'll see if he brings some players with him. https://www.ourlads.com/ncaa-football-depth-charts/depth-chart/iowa-state/90774

Noticing that they had 2 top 10 RBs in the conference but no real WR help.

Kraft be like, I got him mf er's, I am the mother f'in boss up in this place. Ain't no f'in Paterno legacy going to take credit for this sheet. All you mofo's are gonna worship my arse. Jerry Jones ain't got nothing on me.

I feel this hire will be a catastrophe. At least the traffic will be easier on home games.

Just bring some help from ISU for the trenches and at LB, then look around the country fill things out at those positions. In other areas, I like Gronk, Howard, Outten, Denmark, and the TEs, if they stay. The current backup RBs witnessed and practiced with Nick and Kaytron, so if they work hard to emulate and the holes open up, there could be some pleasant surprises (but please, don't get ankle tackled).

So you were all for a position coach getting the job but now that a head coach with a pretty strong record including much better than Franklin against top teams gets the job, you are suddenly unsupportive?

ISU and ASU play in the Big12 conference championship last season. ISU lost by five to Cam Skattebo and the Devils, who then lost on the last play to Texas in the playoffs.

Here is an AI write-up on MC. From Grok.... He really improved ISU.

Matt Campbell's Record at Iowa State

Matt Campbell has been the head coach at Iowa State since the 2016 season, compiling an overall record of 72–55 (.567 winning percentage) through the end of the 2025 regular season (8–4). This makes him the winningest coach in program history. Under Campbell, the Cyclones have achieved consistent success, including five seasons with 8+ wins (a feat that happened just once from 1978–2015), two Big 12 Championship Game appearances (2020 and 2024), and a Fiesta Bowl victory in 2020—the program's first top-10 finish. They've qualified for bowls in seven of his 10 seasons, with three postseason wins.

Comparison to Iowa State Before Campbell Arrived

Before Campbell's arrival in late 2015 (replacing Paul Rhoads), Iowa State was a perennial underachiever in the Big 12, with a program all-time record of approximately 565–674–45 (.457 winning percentage) dating back to 1895—over 100 games below .500. The Cyclones had limited success, especially in modern eras: only 12 seasons with 8+ wins in 133 years of football, just three bowl wins ever, and 11 players drafted in the first four rounds of the NFL Draft from 1979–2015.The three seasons immediately prior to Campbell (under Rhoads) were particularly dismal, totaling just 8–28 (.222 winning percentage) with no bowl appearances

In broader context:

  • Winning Seasons: From 1989–2015 (27 seasons), Iowa State had only five winning records. Under Campbell, eight of 10 seasons have been winning (excluding his 2016 transition year).

  • Big Games: Pre-Campbell, Iowa State was 8–98–2 against AP Top-10 teams. Campbell is 4–6 in those matchups—still sub-.500 but a massive improvement—and owns 43.3% of the program's all-time wins over ranked opponents.

  • Conference Dominance: No Big 12 title game appearances before Campbell; he's led the only two in school history. The 2020 team went 8–0 in conference play, the first outright title since 1912.

  • Overall Impact: Campbell accounts for five of the program's 12 total 8+ win seasons. He's turned a program with modest recruiting (never better than #39 nationally under him) into a consistent contender, often punching above its weight.
In short, Campbell inherited a bottom-tier Big 12 program mired in mediocrity and transformed it into a reliable winner, delivering sustained relevance where there had been chronic inconsistency.

They have 2025 Big12 second team players at RB (Jr) and TE (Jr). Third teamers at OL (but a RS Sr that is out of eligibility), DL (Sr, not sure if eligibility left), and DB (Soph). Honorable Mentions at OL (2 more of them), WR (2 of them), P, and a second RB. https://big12sports.com/documents/2025/12/4//2025_All_Big_12_Release_Final_12_4.pdf

Okay. Does Rojas "think" or does he "know"? Serious question.
Let's be real. If Terry is hired and doesn't bring big reinforcements through the portal and uncommitted recruits, how many "top guys" and sticking around for Terry? Maybe they'll stay for NI $, but that's not related to Terry.
NIL sure is tied to Terry. Or any other new coach, as NIL decisions are made by the head coach. It's the head coach that decides to use disproportionate NIL on returning players and then ends up with 3 portal WR's that are less than average B10 WR's. Terry or any other new head coach will have to make great decisions regarding who's worth the money to keep versus using more NIL on portal players.

And even though Terry would have more sway with some players regarding staying even hiring Terry can't guaratee that the key players needed to form a nucleaus for success in 2026 will stay, especially given all the emotional energy the team has wasted during the dragged out disaster that Kraft has orchastrated.

I'm in the camp that believes keeping a current player is better for team success than bringing in an equally talented portal player. But with all the consternation that the team's been put through by Kraft some key players may have been drained emotionally to the point that both them and the team might be better off if they move on if an outsider coach is brought in. Coaching in NCAA football in the current environment would seem to require high level psychology skills as well as coaching talent. Maybe Franklin had the Psychology skills but I believe we know he just wasn't up to coaching a top 5 team to the success it's players and fans were looking for given the talent his teams had.
