Week 6: #7 Penn State at UCLA (3:30 PM, CBS) Game Thread

I do give UCLA credit. They were the better team today. But we are the better team...period. And there's no excuse for losing to a team we were rightfully favored to beat by almost 4 TDs.

Franklin had a good run. He came close...but no cigar. Time to give somebody else a chance. And fire the high-price coordinators too, starting with the Ohio State guy who got paid millions of dollars to give up 42 points to a winless team that was arguably one of the worst in the country.
Franklin should be fired for that effort, but I don't think we have the money to pull it off. This just showed that Knowles's defense works much better when he has Ohio State-level talent.

If you were on this team and you saw Singleton run and keep getting put back in the game, what would you do?

Id be fucking pissed that my coaches were favoring guys over better players
Franklin should be fired for that alone. I just don't understand the obsession with Singleton.

Did you see Singleton on 2nd with the game on the line? Ran right into his blockers and was stopped on forward progress.

That's after the two carries the series before that put us into 4th and three.

Allar was basically our running game with Singleton in

The team was never ready to play from the start.
Untimely penalties.
Gave up an easy onside kick that the announcers called for before it happened.

Clock management at the end of the half was the worst the announcers have ever seen. 2:00 to go and the ball is in UCLA territory:
Singleton run for 1 yd
Singleton run for 5 yds
Allar run for 2 yds (Behind by 17 and we try nothing down the field)
Allar run (sack) for -11 yds which puts UCLA in FG position with 26 seconds to go

Next to last possession of game with 1:17 remaining:
High pass that Reynolds can't handle
Singleton run for -1 yd
Allar pass to Reynolds brings up 4th and 2
Allar keeps for -3 yds (reminds me of 4th and 5 vs OSU when we handed off to Sanders)
Nothing to attack the defense. No options except the play as called

UCLA punts and takes a safety and runs 8 seconds off the clock because PSU rushes nobody.

With 30 seconds to go we need a 25 yd pass to get us into Hail Mary range but we throw a swing pass to Singleton for 0 yds?

We never put a spy on Nico all game.
We didn't use a backup LB all game even though Deluca was getting pushed around and our guys were gassed.

First time in 20 years that a winless unranked team beat a top 10 team.

Probably the worst coached game I can ever remember.

Address all correspondences and anger with Kraft. We've been jerked around by a guy who's mastered the language and pretends to be coach.
I just spoke with various retirees and professionals who just spent a the time and money to come out here for the game, and they are getting weary.

It's the first time since 1985 that a winless unranked team beat a Top 10 team. This was bad. Just no attention to detail today. Failures in all 3 phases at key times.

There's no fire, energy, or determination in Franklin's teams -- or the staff for that matter -- especially notable at opening kickoff. It's like they're all just showing up for their shift at McDonalds. His teams go exactly as far as the natural talent of the players, no further.

I think Franklin is in a tough spot. If he benches Singleton he will ruin his NFL chances and possibly anger his teammates. But there's no reason why Singleton got 11 carries and Allen only got 8. Franklin could have flipped that without embarrassing Singleton.

Obviously, when you have 25 seconds left and the other team is likely to step out of the end zone for a safety you might want to send someone after the punter in case they run around to kill time. Guess it wasn't obvious to Franklin or Lustig.

Very surprising given what we know about Franklin's clock management skills. (sarcastic)

This ^^^. We might as well cut our loses now. The longer we wait the more the program will slowly rot from within.

It sounds as if the decisions and team dynamics are not good then. Winning and not hurting Singleton's career and feelings would seem to be objective for the players and coach's. And for a fanbase that forks over thousands per year to see this team perform.

Singleton is looking less and less like an NFL player each carry he gets.

And frankly, he sucked last season too. Killed us against ND

I don't condone what Michigan did. They probably cheated in a way that affected games. But Michigan changed its approach to finally beat Ohio State. They recognized that Ohio State liked to play a speed game, and turned their games into slugfests instead. Franklin never seems to change his approach when game planning. And if the game plan's not working, he can't seem to adjust on the fly. I wonder if USC is sitll interested, if they ever were.
